BUS and taxi operators have resolved that all passenger vehicle drivers undergo fresh driving tests in an effort to fight road accidents caused by unprofessional drivers.

This was decided in a meeting organised by the Inspector General of Police, Major Gen. Kale Kayihura.

Present were stakeholders in the transport industry including UTODA, bus and taxi owners, traffic Police and officers from the ministry of transport.

The acting commissioner for traffic and road safety, Steven Kasiima, said all drivers should present original driving permits approved by Face Technologies, the company contracted to print and issue computerised permits.

“Most drivers have fake driving permits while others have forged extensions to include omnibus and heavy vehicles. We shall only test those whose permits have been validated.”

He said the the traffic Police would work with bus and taxi owners and operators to fight carnage on roads.

He claimed that such untrained drivers are partly to blame for the increasing number of accidents on the roads.

He said unprofessional drivers should kicked out of the system.

“Some drivers have grown old and cannot see well, hence a need to force them surrender their jobs to those who are still strong. The involvement of bus and tax owners in this exercise signifies its success,” Kasiima stressed.
He said the exercise also targeted the over 600 bus drivers.
