THIRTY cleft lip and palate patients in southwestern Uganda have received free surgery at Mbarara Hospital.

This was during a one-week surgical camp sponsored by the African Medical Research Foundation in conjunction with Smile Train, an American-based organisation.

The diseases affect the lip and the upper part of the mouth cavity. In children, it is attributed to poor nutrition.

Sr. Dr. Justina Najjuka, headed the team that included Dr. Andrea Todd, a Canadian from McMaster University in Ontario, and Dr. Robert Ssentongo, a surgeon from Mulago Hospital.

Najjuka said they had not been treating these diseases because they lacked the Boyle’s anesthetic machine, which is used in the reconstruction surgery.
