The World Bank has donated $6m (about sh10.5b) to the National water and Sewerage Corporation. The chief manager of institutional development and external services, Silver Mugisha, announced the donation.

“We have already passed the eligibility stage and the World Bank will soon send technical consultants to carry out a detailed survey about the project and an agreement will be signed by the end of this year,” Mugisha said.

He could not immediately recall the number of water connections in Kampala, but said the grant would help put up 40,000 connections for the poor people in the city.

Mugisha was yesterday addressing a delegation from Kaduna in Nigeria, on a visit to explore ways of partnering with Uganda and studying how the water corporation is managing the quality and coverage of the water supply.

Mugisha said his corporation would contribute 30% ($3m) to the project, estimated to cost $9m.

“The project will increase water coverage for the poor to more than 90%. This is to show that our focus is mainly on the poor,” he said.

The corporation has achieved 95% coverage of safe water in 22 towns in Uganda.

The Minister of Water, Maria Mutagamba, said in 1986, water coverage was only 18%. “But due to reforms we have been able to move fast in this sector.”
