assault is the leading crime in Teso region, with 2,291 cases reported in 2006, the acting Regional Police Commander, Francis Egwoku, has said. He added the the crime was on the rise as he compared the new figures with the 1,944 cases in 2005. Egwoku attributed the rise in assault cases to excessive alcohol intake, which he said had led to an increase in bar fights and domestic violence. He told journalists at his office on Tuesday that about 7,869 cases were reported in the region last year.

Woman sent to High Court

A woman who allegedly strangled her stepson has been committed to the High Court for trial. Florence Takali is accused of killing three-year-old Balikowa Mulyakimo on August 3, 2006 at Mubembe village, Jaguzi Island in Mayuge district. She reportedly strangled the boy over defecating on his bed. Takali is to face trial on a murder charge in the next criminal session. Prosecution said a postmortem report showed that the child’s neck bone was broken. The child’s father was away when the incident happened.
