THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has launched a technical committee on goods imported into the country.
The move is aimed at minimising entry of substandard goods into the country.
The 10-man committee from various institutions will assist UNBS to assess the quality of commodities where the public has raised complaints.
Serapio Rukundo, the state minister for industry, launched the committee at Hotel Equatorial on Monday.
Rukundo said the country had a broad market for almost all locally-produced goods but their quality was a barrier.
He said there was need to enforce quality on locally-made and imported products through constant inspection.
“Local investors are competing with the foreign investors hence a need to control quality.
“UNBS staff will be deployed at all entry points to ensure that all imported goods conform to required standards,†explained the minister.
Patrick Sekitoleko, the head of standards development committee at UNBS, disclosed that there was public outcry over the existence of fake goods.
