KAMPALA party animals didn’t have to be in Brazil to take part in the carnival. Club Rouge on Kampala Road organised a similar event to coincide with the carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend.

The carnival is the main event on the Caribbean country’s entertainment calendar, which happens at the peak of summer. The annual festivities attract thousands of people from all corners of the world.

In Kampala, patrons who turned out for the carnival celebrations at Club Rouge got some relief from the usual Kidandali tunes played by local DJs in Kampala nightclubs. Fans got to dance all night long to the best of Samba, Salsa, Calypso, Meringue and Afro-Caribbean tunes spun by a guest Latino DJ.

Even when Bobi Wine sampled his latest hit, Kikomando, nobody seemed to be bothered. His appearance wasn’t a highlight despite all his musical success. But whichever way we looked at him, he still gave the carnival a local touch.

However, Phina Mugerwa’s performance could best be described as energy wasted. As she performed her famous Masanyalaze song, gyrating, it was clear that her fans were not present in the club because she was not able to excite the audience like she always does in other places.
