The qualified medics are not helping

SIR — Our health sector has left a lot to be desired in the past 10 years; save for some credit scored in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Last year, the president observed the weaknesses in this ministry. He said health personnel swindle drugs from government hospitals and health centres to their private clinics.

He also said it was not prudent for any doctor to work in both the private sector and Government. He was right and this is why there are no people to work in the hospitals.

The people most affected are those in rural areas, served mostly by health centres. Someone on the government payroll only works for two days in a week. Some only work twice a month.

This is the reason why quack doctors are on the increase in order to supplement the missing qualified cadres.
