DENIS Anguyo was the best placed Ugandan after returning six over par 76 on the first day of the Tusker Kenya Open golf tournament at Karen Country Club in Nairobi.

Carlos Del Moral from Spain was the overnight leader with five under par 65 on Thursday.

Anguyo started the first nine with three over par 35 with a similar score on the back nine to go into Friday’s round with the hope of bouncing back to make the cut and assure himself of at least sh1.1m.

Godfery Mande, with a birdie on hole 12, returned nine over par 79, 14 shots behind the leader.

Deo Akope said after day one: “I never saw a fairway save for 6 and 9. I also lost my kit in South Africa last week and I had to rely on a borrowed one which I have hardly used for a week.”

Only one Kenyan, Aliec McGuiness was among the top ten after hitting two under for fifth place.

Meanwhile, Golfers at the Bro Group Western Open this weekend will have to contend with a dry and fast course.

A long spell of no rain has left the par-70 Toro Club course in Fort Portal dry, posing an added challenge.

Club chairman Smart Bwango explained that the nature of the course will be motivation for more effort.

“We depend on the rain to keep the course in good shape, but it is playable,” Bwango said.

National champion Stephen Birungi starts his title defence.
