THE Muteesa I Foundation has put up a sh70m monument in Kampala in commemoration of the first Ugandan president, Kabaka Edward Muteesa II.

The foundation’s legal advisor, Yusuf Nsubuga Nsambu, revealed that the statue that is covered with black polythene material, portraying Muteesa as a fighter in military fatigue holding a machete in his right hand, is near the Grand Imperial Hotel.

James Ssekagya, who started the foundation, said the statue recognises Muteesa’s tireless efforts in fighting for Uganda’s independence.

He revealed that a Chinese firm, International Chinese Artistes, modelled the monument that was paid for by city tycoon Gordon Wavamunno and added that they had formally requested President Yoweri Museveni to officially launch the statue.

Muteesa died in 1969 in the UK after he was forced into exile by President Milton Obote’s soldiers who attacked Mengo in 1966.
