EXPORT earnings have risen to $812m, an increase of 24%, the Uganda Exports Promotion Board’s executive director, Florence Kata, has said.

“Export earnings increased from $653m (about sh1.1 trillion) in 2004 to $812m (about sh1.4 trillion) in 2005,” Kata said at a National Export Strategy conference at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe.

“We are in the process of making the National Export Strategy that aims at increasing exports. We have experts from the International Trade Centre (ITC) funded by the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the Commonwealth helping us,” she said.

Kata said in 2005, the value of coffee exports grew by 39%.

“Fish and fish products’ value grew by 30% in 2005. Fish export volumes grew by 23% from the previous year’s levels,” she said in a report, “Export Performance Analysis,” for 2005.

The European Union remained Uganda’s biggest importer of fish with France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands accounting for over 50% of the exports.

ITC’s consultant Owen Skae urged the Government to improve exports through public-private partnerships.

“The Government needs to create an environment that allows the private sector to do business by reducing the cost of doing business while the private sector focuses on improving competitiveness,” Skae said.
