THREE northern districts will soon have modern abattoirs, courtesy of the African Development Bank. The agriculture minister, Hilary Onek, told journalists on Saturday that his ministry would oversee the projects in Gulu, Kitgum and Pader districts.

“We have got about $60m (about 105b) from the bank to revamp agriculture. The abattoirs will ensure that meat is handled in a professional way unlike now where people slaughter animals under trees and in dirty dilapidated abattoirs.”

The minister stated that bureaucracy was delaying the release of funds.
He, however, added that everything was in place to start the construction. He said part of the money would be used to restock cattle, control diseases and construct landing sites.

Meanwhile, the Gulu mayor, Christopher Acire, has said his council has earmarked sh300m to build a new abattoir, adding that they are awaiting the Government’s approval of their plan. He said the current abattoir was very small and its location in the town centre was inconveniencing surrounding businesses.
