OVER eight commercial buildings at Mashonga trading centre in Kyamuhunga sub-county, Bushenyi district have been closed over poor sanitation.

The area councillors and the district technical staff on Tuesday also demolished latrines, kitchens and make-shift bathrooms which were filthy.

The operation, which was led by the chief administrative officer, Charles Kiberu, left several places which sell pork razed because some of them had no toilets, while others had dirty utensils.

“Several buildings do not have toilets. People defecate in polythene bags and throw them in the roads,” Kiberu lamented.

The LCI chairman, Bashir Mugisha, attributed the growing population in the area to the tea factory which has provided employment to hundreds.

A councillor who preferred anonymity disclosed that there were no latrines in the tea fields.

The councillor said the workers were at the risk of water-borne disease like cholera and diarrhoea.
Kiberu said he would ask the factory authorities to construct latrines.
