PROFESSIONAL boxer Kassim Ouma earned $800,000 (sh1.428bn) from his middleweight world title fight against Jermain Taylor in December. There was speculation after the fight, which Ouma lost on points in Arkansas, that he walked away with $500,000.

The Ugandan pugilist revealed yesterday that he had got $300,000 (sh522m) more.
The West Palm Beach based prize fighter explained that he paid off $150,000 (sh267.7m) for expenses.

“ I got $800, 000,” Ouma told boxingtalk.com in an interview about the Taylor fight. He also explained his frustration at the pay his promoters are now offering him.

Ouma is after such a pay day, not impressed by the $50,000 (sh88m) his promoters Golden Boy are proposing for his next fight against an opponent yet to named.

Golden Boy want Ouma to fight on the Oscar De La Hoya versus Floyd Mayweather under card on May 5 in Las Vegas.

“De La Hoya is going to make $40m and they offered $50,000 for a fighter like me. I never want to talk bad, but I’m very upset about the way things have been going,” noted Ouma.

John “The Beast” Mugabi is the only other Ugandan sportsman believed to have earned over $700,000 from a single fight.

Mugabi, long retired in Australia, is reported to have won close to $1m. This was in Mugabi’s world middleweight title fight against Marvin Hagler in 1986.
