THE NRM secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, has advised Stephen Lubowa, an independent candidate in the Kamuli local council by-elections, to step down in the interest of the party.

Lubowa, an NRM loyalist, was advised to adhere to the party rules.

“I assure the people of Budiope that Parliament and Cabinet will approve the decision for the country to become a district. The party is ready to back Lubowa during the local council elections,” Mbabazi said at a rally for the NRM candidate, Stephen Mubiru, at Kisozi on Sunday.

“I know my brother Lubowa because he was the Budiope MP in the sixth parliament. He belongs to the movement although he is vying for the seat as an independent candidate. We are now in party politics and it would be good if he waited for a similar opportunity when Budiope becomes a district,” Mbabazi stressed.

He said under the multiparty system, members were required to seek consent of the party before standing for any office.
