One of China’s biggest vehicle manufacturers, Jincheng International Motors, has opened an assembling plant for motorcycles and small tractors in Uganda, writes Charles Bwogi.
“We are assembling 2,000 motorcycles every month and looking at growing the market further,†David Jiang, the company’s general manager, said.
Jiang said most of the people working at the assembling plant in Mbuya are Ugandans.
“We have so far trained over 40 local mechanics and are planning to increase the number with the increase in the demand,†he said, adding that the company plans to expand to neighbouring markets like southern Sudan and DR Congo.
Jiang said the small tractors are meant for the average farming communities who cannot afford the heavy tractors.
