THE widow of David Oyite Ojok, the former army chief of staff in the Obote II regime, has died.

A family member, Betty Atim, said Rebecca Oyite Ojok, 62, died on Wednesday at the Uganda Heart Institute, Mulago hospital.

Rebecca, known by many as Mama Simba, had been hospitalised following a stroke in March.

“Mama got the first stroke in February but was hospitalised after the second one. She has not been well,” Atim said. Rebecca will be buried on Sunday in Loro, Lira district.

Francis Bongonyinge, a member of the funeral committee, said a service would be held at Christ the King Church in Kampala at 10:00am today and another at Lira Cathedral later in the day. The body will then stay overnight at her home in Lira Senior quarters before being taken to Loro on Saturday.

Michael Lia, a family friend, said in the 1980s, Rebecca was the patron of the association of people with disabilities, which endeared her to many.

Rebecca, a trained nurse, was involved in mass agricultural production and was a member of the National Farmers association.
