The Government is conducting a slum profiling exercise in Mbarara, Kampala, Lira, Arua and Mbale districts, reports Reuben Olita.

The Minister of State for Housing, Michael Werikhe, on Tuesday said the exercise would help formulate the national slum upgrading strategy and mobilise resources to implement it.

He was addressing participants during the 21st session of the governing council for the UN-HABITAT in Kenya. The session was opened by the Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki.

Werikhe revealed that Kampala City Council was in the process of reviewing its structural plan which expired in 2004.

He noted that the Government supports the proposed experimental Reimbursable Seed Operations within the UN-Habitat foundation.

Werikhe, however, said two years proposed for its review are short, arguing that housing was a long- term investment.

He urged the United Nations y and other development partners to provide technical and financial assistance in order to implement the strategy.

During the session, a 250-page report, the World Watch Institute’s State of the World 2007, was launched. It focuses on the progress made towards a sustainable society.
