East African power summit to take place

THE Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL) is to host the East African electricity interconnection workshop, a statement has disclosed.

The workshop is aimed at increasing the value of electricity interconnection in the region and power production. It also aims at facilitating further development of regional power resources and increasing utilisation of the electricity grid interconnections and facilities.

The workshop slated for July 5 and 6 will be held at the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Entebbe. It is also intended to facilitate planning and investment in new interconnections to mitigate power crises.

UETCL’s Corporate Business Plan 2006-2010 objective is to spearhead inter-regional power trade through maintaining vibrant power sector.

Issues to be discussed include ways of mitigating the current and future power crisis, realisation of the need for electricity grid interconnectivity and facilitation of more direct cooperation between the regional utilities. Participants will come from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
