ENTEBBE Municipality has dismissed reports that two housing estates, a public cemetery and a forest reserve have been sold to developers.

The properties in question are Manyago and Kiwafu housing estates, Kigungu Cemetery, Kitoro Market and Kitubulu Central Forest Reserve.

“Manyago Housing Estate is still a property of Entebbe Municipal Council and the people spreading these rumours are saboteurs of development,” said deputy town clerk, Amon Muzoora, during a briefing on Wednesday.
He explained that the dilapidated houses are being rented out between sh15,000 and sh25,000.

Attempts to increase the rent for the council to renovate them have been frustrated by the tenants.

He revealed that the council had already received a go-ahead from the Government to redevelop the estate
“The council is still waiting for the consultant’s advice, the new plan and the costing of the project. After this, it will choose the way forward.”

Concerning Kitoro market, he confirmed that both the old market and the new location are still properties of the municipal council.

“The council has already acquired between sh200m and sh300m and is still mobilising funds for the construction of the new market. It will be a modern market expected to cost sh3b,” Muzoora revealed.

He explained that Kiwafu Housing Estate is due for redevelopment and tenants were given notice of three months to vacate.

He said the estate will be turned into local council offices so the present occupants have no chance to bid.

He also clarified that the municipality had not sold off the public cemeteries, and that Kigungu Cemetery was still in use.
Muzoora concluded that Kitubulu Central Forest Reserve is the property of the central Government under the National Forest Authority.

“The council has not sold Kitubulu forest, as alleged, and if the central Government is interested in degazetting it, the law must apply.”
