UN-Habitat and Lake Victoria Region Local Authorities Co-operation will help Jinja municipal council in developing Jinja town into a city.

Jinja mayor Mohammed Baswale Kezaala last Monday told the press that Jinja was the 8th city to be chosen by the UN agency for upgrading.

He said the Lake Victoria local authorities cooperation would hold its annual general meeting in Jinja on July 27.

The function to be attended by over 100 mayors, whose cities border Lake Victoria, will be opened by President Yoweri Museveni.

Kezaala noted that the meeting would coincide with Jinja’s centenary celebrations.

Cecilia Njenga, of the UN-Habitat, said Jinja has a high rural population and the city status would demand an integration of the rural and urban populations.

Julius Oyo Odongo, the general secretary of the cooperation, said they would focus on cleanliness.

“Since Jinja wants a city, we shall plant trees to beautify it and carry out cleaning exercises on the lake shores as a way of reducing pollution.”
