Bogere is April’s top sports personality

ZONE V gold medallist Sherif Bogere has won the uganda telecom /Uganda Sports Press Association April award. Bogere beat Ethiopian Daniel Tadere in the lightweight final.

ZONE V gold medallist Sherif Bogere has won the uganda telecom /Uganda Sports Press Association April award.

The sports journalists, meeting at Lugogo yesterday, chose Bogere (550 points) after he won Uganda’s lone gold medal at the Zone V boxing championship in Cairo, Egypt last month.
Bogere beat Ethiopian Daniel Tadere in the lightweight final.

The boxer beat Dakar IAAF Grand Prix 800m winner Abraham Chepkirwok (435) and Team Uganda (365) at the East African Motocross championships to the award.

Bogere will get his award next week.
The Kampala-based Bogere was the only Ugandan in the team of ten who made it to the finals. All his colleagues lost to strong Egyptian opposition in the final.

Chepkirwok was nominated for the award after he beat a host of Kenyan athletes to win the Dakar meet.
The sports writers commended rally driver Suzan Muwonge for finishing fifth, the best position by a Ugandan driver at the Pearl of Africa Rally.

Chess star Patrick Kawuma (for being unbeaten) and Busoga College Mwiri (for winning the title) in the Father Grimes Post Primary schools tournament and Masaka SS for lifting the inaugural All Girls secondary schools football title.
The meeting had a communications consultant at prime Time Communication, Denis Jjuuko present a paper about journalism in the Digital Age.

The meeting was told that the annual journalist of the year award will be reintroduced later this year while president Douglas Mazune and secretary Hussein Ahmed will represent the association at the International Sports Press Association congress due May 16 in Austria.

Meanwhile, the sports scribes have been invited for training in various sports disciplines as a way of keeping fit.
