UGANDAN Deo Akope fired two under par 70 to qualify for the Vodacom Origins Golf Tour in South Africa on Tuesday.
Akope, Uganda’s top golfer, finished fifth in a strong international field of 80 at the Pretoria Country Club to qualify for the lucrative 54-hole tournament that gets underway today.

Only 10 golfers qualified for the tournament that is one of the Sunshine Tour events. South African Edward Nutts came top in the qualifier with a course record of 10 under par 62.

Akope, whose trip was sponsored by Multiple Industries, today embarks on a 36-hole battle to try and make the cut and earn some money. Only 40 of the 80 golfers will compete in the final round.

“It’s a very nice course; I managed to get several birdies and an eagle. I hope to do well in the tournament. There are indications of a bright future on the international scene,” an excited Akope told The New Vision by phone from Pretoria.

Akope made his maiden cut in the professional ranks in the Zambia Open, which is also a Sunshine Tour event, in March.
