LOCAL athletes head to the International School of Uganda, Lubowa today, with an aim of qualifying for July’s All Africa Games due in Algiers, Algeria. The meet can also qualify athletes to the World Championships in Osaka and World University Games in Thailand.

Sprinters like Justine Bayiga, Emily Nanziri and Sarah Olobo will also have a chance to meet again to renew their track rivalry.
Though they cannot qualify for the world event, they can qualify for the All Africa Games after the local federation suspended the requirement to qualify only via electronic timers.

Today’s event, which is held by the 212 international athletics body affiliates to celebrate the World Athletics Day, will start at 8am.

“It is one of the few events where athletes as young as six years take to the track. It is an event where we celebrate athletics and take it to the youngsters,” explained local athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.
There will be buses to pick the athletes from the Constitution Square at 8am to the venue and return them after the event.

The senior athletes will be trying to qualify for various international events, while the juniors will have a chance of entering the IAAF draw, where the lucky two will have an all expense paid trip to Osaka, Japan to watch the World Athletics Championships.
