SIR — I have been following with interest the debate on the decline in ranking by Makerere University in a research done by a Middle East firm. My advice to the Makerere administrators who feel wronged by the findings is to take on the authors of the rankings and challenge them on the parameters used.

I know of a reputable university in the US which challenged Fortune Magazine early this year after being ranked outside its traditional top 10 positions. Of course the university was challenging the rankings on very firm grounds and when Fortune were asked to avail the source and basis of ranking, it was found flawed and the rankings withdrawn.

If Makerere believes they can challenge the rankings, then they should go right ahead and take on the authors of the rankings. Otherwise it does not help anyone to just scream that the rankings were unfair.
