Kategaya, Kagame meet

KIGALI-The Minister for East Africa, Eriya Kategaya, recently held talks with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. Their talks centred on the East African Community (EAC), according to Rwanda’s The New Times. The newspaper said Kategaya, who is also the chairman of the council of ministers for EAC, briefed Kagame on the on-going talks between the regional bloc and the European Union. “We are visiting all EAC member states trying to see how the community can form a special cooperation with the European Union especially in the areas of trade and development,” said Kategaya.


Masaka stuck with Engabu

MASAKA-Distributors of Engabu condoms have asked the Ministry of Health to stop releasing the brand due their declining demand. According to the chairman of the district health committee, Bbaale Mukasa, stores are full of boxes of Engabu condoms because people complain that they are small and have a foul smell. He was on Thursday receiving over 17,000 condoms from the Uganda AIDS Commission. Bbaale decried the high price of condoms in the district, saying a packet costs sh1,000.


Cop jailed for manslaughter

LUWEERO-A Police officer, Joseph Odongo, was on Thursday charged with manslaughter following last year’s incident in which a stray bullet killed a resident. The incident happened as the Police dispersed a rioting mob in Wobulenzi town on July 4. A witness, Hussein Kyeyune, a shopkeeper in Wobulenzi town, told court that Odongo lowered his gun and shot two bullets at Ibrahim Kayonde, killing him instantly.

KCC probes land title loss

KAMPALA-Kampala City Council (KCC) has set up a committee to investigate the loss of three land titles. The titles include two for Nateete Market and another for Kisingiri Estates in Mengo. The mayor, Nasser Sebaggala, instructed the acting Town Clerk, Ruth Kijjambu, to explain the circumstances under which the titles disappeared. The titles were a subject of investigation by the parliamentary committee on local government over the controversial lease of Nakasero Market to Hassan Basajjabalaba.

Thug killed in Kayunga

KAYUNGA-The Police battled with robbers in a shoot-out that left one dead and another injured. The incident followed an attempted robbery in Bukolooto trading centre near Bukolooto Police post on Tuesday. The deputy district officer in charge of crime, Casius Adille, said the thugs had been terrorising residents of Jinja and Tororo. He identified him as Simon Peter Emojong. A Police officer, Alfred Otim, was shot in the arm and was rushed to Mulago hospital.

3 ADF killed in Bundibugyo

BUNDIBUGYO-The UPDF has killed three Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels this week. Two rebels were killed at Kakara in Semiliki game reserve by soldiers of the 53rd battalion while the other died at Kakuka, Kagugu near the Congo boarder. The UPDF Second Division spokesperson, Lt.Tabaro Kiconco, on Wednesday said two guns, a statelite phone and bullets were recovered from the rebels. He said the army was mobilising residents against supporting the rebels.
