THE speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, has assured MPs that the Constituency Development Fund has not been scrapped. The legislators receive sh10m each to develop their constituencies.

Ssekandi’s announcement contradicted the Chief Whip Masiko Kabakumba’s recent remarks that the fund was scrapped due to MPs’ failure to account for the first batch.

“Your money is there. You only need to make arrangements of how to spend and account for it,” Ssekandi announced to applause from the MPs.

The budget committee chaired by William Okecho allocated sh3.2b to the parliamentary Commission for the fund.
The money was re-allocated after the MPs discovered sh405b in the budget that was not allocated.

Ssekandi applauded the MPs saying, “Within one year of multiparty politics, you have exhibited total maturity. I hope you do the same in the coming sessions.”
He was closing the first session of the 8th Parliament at a function organised by the NRM caucus at the Parliamentary Gardens.

The party was attended by the Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Prof. Ogenga Latigo, ministers and opposition MPs.

The NRM secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, thanked the MPs for their contributions towards the party, adding: “The party is proud of you.”
Mbabazi called on the opposition MPs to work with NRM MPs for the development of the country.
