WETLANDS in Buganda region have persistently been destroyed, a survey by the National Environment Authority (NEMA) has revealed.

The survey indicates that 70% of wetlands in Mukono district, particularly in Seeta, Ntawo, Mbalala, Najja and Buikwe were encroached on by farmers and brick makers.

The deputy executive director of NEMA, Gerald Musoke, said this during the launch of the Buganda environment month at the Kabaka’s Lake in Ndeeba yesterday.

Musoke, who did not reveal when the survey was conducted, added that 75% of wetlands in Kampala had also been destroyed due to the increasing number of factories in kinaw-ataka and Nalukolongo.
In Mukono, he said Lake Victoria, River Nile and Sezibwa falls had been degraded due to farming on the shores.

Musoke explained that Masaka district makes 10,000 bricks per day, leaving many open holes with stagnant water which harbour bacteria.

Kabaka Ronald Mutebi in a speech read by Prince David Wasajja, was irked by the continued discharge of sewage into the lake. Present was Katikkiro Emmanuel ssendaula.
