The foreign affairs minister has advised Ugandans to engage in constructive debates.

“We are faced with problems like unemployment, poverty and disease. But we are debating Museveni’s replacement or who is sleeping with who. This is pedestrian,” Sam Kutesa, said at a Celtel-sponsored dinner to celebrate Africa Day at Serena Hotel in Kampala.

He noted that Africa faced challenges in research, elimination of poverty and diseases and infrastructure development.

“The challenge to our leadership, therefore, is to transform our economies into skill-based ones,” Kutesa said.

Africa Day, celebrated on May 25, recognises the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963. The organisation was replaced the African Union five years ago.

The Rwanda ambassador to Uganda, Kamali Karegesa, who is the dean of the African diplomatic corps, said there was need to accelerate socio-economic development of the continent since it is endowed with great potential.
“We must find ways of exploiting our natural resources and add value to our products.”
