THE Danish government has commended Uganda for fighting corruption. Quoting President Yoweri Museveni’s statement on the NRM’s determination not to cover-up corrupt officials, Stig Barlyng said: “Those are clear words and the President should be thanked for reminding everybody.
“I hope that they will assist all political leaders in Uganda to direct their full attention to an onslaught on corruption.â€
The Danish ambassador was on Sunday speaking during the celebrations to mark the 156th anniversary of the Danish constitution at his residence in Kololo, Kampala.
Barlyng said the Danish constitution had not been changed since 1953.
“Our constitution has proven its durability. It provides the necessary safeguards for the fundamental rights of the people of Denmark.â€
On multiparty politics, Barlyng noted that Ugandan MPs had done a good job.
“The majority (of them) being in NRM and the minority in the opposition, parties are doing their best to accommodate each other in mutual respect. Let this be further cemented.â€
The foreign affairs state minister, Isaac Musumba, reiterated the Government’s commitment to fighting corruption.
He thanked Denmark for reconstructing feeder roads in northern Uganda and its efforts to restore peace in the region.
Musumba assured the Danes that the Government would ensure that the disarmament programme in Karamoja sub-region does not violate human rights. He urged them to promote Uganda as a tourist destination.
