British American Tobacco is to pay farmers more money for their tobacco, writes James Odomel.

“The company will pay sh3,300 for Top Grade Flue Cured Virginia Tobacco up from sh3,000 and sh2,450 for Top Grade Burley Tobacco, up from sh2,400. In addition, for every extra 30% tobacco the farmer delivers on top of his targeted volume, he will receive a 5% bonus payment,” the managing director, Serhat Eroglu, said in an interview.

Eroglu said the number of registered farmers had increased from 29,000 last year to 47,000 this year.

“The company’s aim this year is to increase volumes and provide more support to the farmers. We are committed to excelling in our cooperation with the farmers, especially as this year marks 80 years of BATU operating in partnership with farmers in Uganda,” he explained.

He said the company is committed to maximising its contribution to the Government’s strategy of adding value to agricultural products for export.
