THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards is to recruit more technical staff to strengthen the control of imported goods into the country.

“This financial year, we shall open more border and inland container depot-based import inspection offices and recruit more technical staff to further control entry of imports,” said Dr. Terry Kahuma, the executive director.

“This is possible because the Government increased our budgetary allocation to sh3.84b in 2005, up from sh1.5b in 2002,” he explained.

Kahuma disclosed that President Yoweri Museveni promised increased funding to the watchdog after a visit last year.

He added that the President also pledged to raise the figure to sh12b annually after the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala in November.

He said they had advanced faster because the council (board) was focused on critical scientific analysis and guidance of the bureau’s affairs.

“We trust that following the recent significant salary increases and the restructuring process guided by the council, the bureau will continue to be effective as the people’s quality police and the vanguard of health and safety protection of the public,” Kahuma said.

He said the bureau had introduced a product certification scheme to support local industries and protect consumers.
