UGANDA Breweries has injected sh30m into the second edition of the UBL/FOF veterans’ soccer gala that kicks off on August 5.

UBL head of corporate relations Marion Muyobo unveiled the package during a press conference at their headquarters in Luzira on Friday.

She explained that the package will cover transport, allowances for match officials, medical care, lunch, trophies, security and accommodation for upcountry participants.

“It is quite a big commitment that Uganda Breweries is passionate about. FOF’s idea (gala) was clear; we had to sponsor them,” Muyobo said.

She said that UBL was identifying Kenyan soccer veterans to spice up the tournament.

The gala intended for former players above 40 years of age is meant to get back retired players, most of whom have either taken on other roles or deserted the game entirely.

“We have members approaching 70 years of age. It is interesting to watch them play because they still have the touch but only lack the pace,” FOF member Richard Kiboneka said.

The gala set off with a curtain-raiser match between the staff of UBL and Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA), which the brewers won 3-1.

Participants invited for the gala are veterans of Corporate FC who won the inaugural gala last year, Express, SC Villa and KCC. Others are from the defunct teams Coffee, Nsambya, Bell and Nile. Zamani and Wazalendo will be composed of veterans whose former clubs cannot raise a team.

UBL also sponsors the Uganda Rugby Cranes.
