THE Police dispersed the FDC rally at Matale in Mukono district on Tuesday because it was illegal, the central regional Police commander, Alfred Bitwire, explained yesterday.

“Police shot in the air to disperse the crowd after they failed to leave the venue peacefully. The organisers of the rally did not inform us,” Bitwire said.

He said FDC leader Col. Kizza Besigye should have informed the Police before addressing the rally.
Mukono district Police commander, James Aurien, was at the scene when the force dispersed the crowd.

No one was arrested and no injuries were reported after the scuffle.

The rally was organised by an aspirant for Buikwe south parliamentary seat, Ahmed Sserunjogi.

Sserunjogi said he got permission from the Police in Ngogwe to hold the rally.

Besigye said the Police action was unlawful.

“I was just launching an organisation of youths and women geared at fighting poverty in the area. It was not a political rally or gathering that necessitated the presence of the Police,” he said.
