THE Police recently grilled Pastor Pastor Obiri Yeboah of ‘We are One Ministries’ for using a gadget that is said to shock members of his congregation. Stephen Ssenkaaba analyses how the machine works.

The Electric Touch Machine is a product of Yigal Mesika, an Israeli magician based in Los Angeles, California.

According to www.yigalmesika.com, Yigal’s official website, the machine possesses static shock meant to arouse excitement, mystery and supernatural powers.

“The Electric Touch charges a person’s body through the 12-volt batteries in the device. Once one’s body is charged, they are able to transfer this electricity to other people,” reads a one-page instruction manual.

The machine make up
It is made up of an electric touch device which comprises a metal housing, magnet, batteries and an instructional DVD. The electric touch uses 12-volt batteries. While various batteries can be used to run the machine, the users manual recommends MN21/23 Duracell batteries. These batteries last over 200 shocks.

Application
To use this machine, you need to attach the copper piece at the end of the wire underneath your shoe with the included conductive tape. This will ground the Electric Touch Device.

This is only a temporary application, as the tape may not be able to withstand a lot of walking ground. Nevertheless, you will be able to get a feel for the Electric Touch.

To maximise the machine’s full potential, you will need to permanently add the rectangular metal housing piece to the bottom of the heel of your left shoe.
There are three methods for installing the metal housing.

The first method
Cut two pieces of rubber to be attached to the bottom of the heel of the shoes. The rubber should be the same thickness as the metal housing.

The pieces are then glued to the bottom of the shoes.
lAttach the metal piece to the bottom of the left shoe. This should be done with super glue and a screw.

The metal piece is attached with the slide facing the back and the screw, closer to the middle of the shoe. It is important to screw this piece in so it does not fall out.

The second method
Cut a piece of rubber to be attached to the bottom of the left heel. It will need to be the same thickness as the metal housing piece. The rubber piece that is cut will then need to have a piece cut out the same size as the metal housing piece. This cut is made at the back of the heel.

The third method
This requires cutting out a piece that matches the metal housing piece directly from the sole of the left shoe and follow similar procedures as above.

Once the metal piece has been glued to the bottom of the left shoe, the magnet is then glued to the inside of the heel of the right shoe. This is done to operate the magnetic reed switch located at the bottom of the wire attached to the copper.

Before any gluing, the user is required to tie the electric touch around his left calf, ensuring that that the side with the copper piece is touching the skin.

He will then insert the copper piece located at the end of the wire into the groove in the metal housing piece previously installed by the shoe maker and then line up the magnetic reed switch (located at the bottom of the wire) with the inside of the heel of the right shoe. This is where they will locate the magnet.

When the indicator on the Electric Touch turns on, the device will have been placed in the correct position. Looking at his shoes from above, they will be in the shape of a Capital L. Once this location has been found, the user will superglue the magnet to that location on the inside heel of his right shoe.

He will then let it dry and later put a piece of black electrical tape over it to disguise the magnet from the audience.

On the Box of the Electric Touch is an on and off Master Switch. It is supposed to be kept in the off position while the machine is not in use.

There is also an LED located on the box of the Electric Touch — an indicator used to verify when the magnet has turned the device on.

User tips
lThe Electric Touch machine should be operated on a low setting.
lThe performer will receive 50% of the shock and the recipient, the other 50%. You can also use a metal object such as a spoon, to transfer the shock to another person so that you hardly feel the shock.

If you are on carpet, or want a bigger shock, put some water on the ground and step on it with your left heel so that the metal piece is touching the water. This will create more conductivity.

Do it in a location where you are grounded. If you are on an ungrounded surface, you can put a copper sheet on the floor and step on it with your left foot.

To help the copper piece stay in the housing, you can bend it slightly to provide more friction inside the groove of the housing. You can also put a piece of tape around the wire and attach it to the shoe for more security.

Once you have the magnet in the correct place, you can cut out a hole in the heel of your shoe and make the magnet invisible by permanently gluing it in.

To gain more conductivity, add more conductive tape on the bottom of your shoe, even if you are using the metal housing provided with the Electric Touch.
