FORUM for African Women Educationists (FAWE)-Uganda and Mvule Trust, have sponsored 205 girls for A’ level and 55 in O’ level. The girls sponsored for A’ Level, are from the districts of Nebbi, Arua, Yumbe, Moyo, Adjumani, Amuria, Katakwi and Kaberamaido, the forum said in a statement last week.

“We chose these districts because of their low O’ to A’ Level transition rates,” say the statement signed by FAWE-Uganda’s national coordinator, Susan Mubala. “Very few girls in those districts ever make it to A’ Level.”

Mubala said girls have found places in 80 schools, most of them boarding, so to maximise time for studying.

The sponsorship programme provides tuition, uniform, examination charges, mosquito nets and reproductive health and life skills counselling.

One of the beneficiaries is Anjella Adelo, the best girl in Teso sub- region with 27 aggregates in eight subjects at O’ Levels.
The student, who sat her exams at Midland High School, a privately-owned day school in Kaberamaido, could not afford fees for A’ Level.

Adelo is from a family of nine children. Her mother died leaving their father to struggle to care for the children single-handedly. He has untold difficulties. Adelo has been admitted to Ngora High School, where she will study Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Agriculture.

“We were hoping to fund girls to take science subjects at A’ Level,” says Mvule Trust director Cathy Watson. “But these girls are from really poor backgrounds so their performance at O’ level in science was weak. Only 15 girls or 7% of the total are taking sciences. Still we are thrilled to be helping them,” she said.

Some districts like Yumbe have only 15 girls in A’ Level as most girls get married early. FAWE is supporting 2,571 girls in school with funds from Mvule Trust, USAID and Irish Aid.

Mvule Trust is supporting 1,693 students in secondary and vocational institutes, of whom 73% are girls.
