A water tank worth sh240m has been installed at Luzira Prisons Complex. The tank, with a capacity of 330,000 litres, was a donation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It will serve 4,500 inmates and over 10,000 residents and can provide water for at least one and half day in the event of interrupted water supply.

Handing over the tank on Friday, the deputy head of the ICRC delegation, Beat Mosimann, said the committee wanted to improve the living conditions of the inmates by providing them with safe and clean water.

“We are happy that over 10,000 persons including prison staff and their families will benefit from this project.”

The Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, said the prison was paying a lot of money for water lost as a result of a leaking tank installed 80 years ago when Luzira Upper Prison was built. He noted that with the installation of the tank, the prison’s bills would reduce.

Eng. Stephen Kagoda, the Internal Affairs permanent secretary, commended ICRC for its contribution, adding that the availability of safe water reduces the spread of diseases like cholera and dysentery that are linked to poor sanitation.
