OVER sh400m has been collected from Nakasero Market vendors for registration and building the market. Abby Kalinaki, the vendors’ spokesman, said the sh400m had been collected by Tuesday afternoon.

“We have completed registration of our association and are in the process of getting title deeds for the market as well as raising the money needed for our work. We will need time to work out the designs and plans and organise the money.”

“We have divided the vendors into departments and graded the stall-owners. Out of 47 shops, 38 have paid sh10m each. Seven restaurants out of 21 paid sh7m each and they are continuing to pay,” Kalinaki said.

He said of the 25,000 people working in the market, 18,000 had registered with the association. The association is called Nakasero Market Sitting Association.

Godfrey Kakooza, the association’s chairman, said the sh400m was payment of pledges.

Kalinaki said they were not planning to get a financial partner because they have the ability to raise their own capital.

Last week, President Yoweri Museveni resolved the controversy over the market by ordering that the sitting tenants be given priority to own the market instead of leasing it to businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba.
