OVER 440,000 candidates have registered for this year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), up from 435,018 last year. The increase is attributed to the free Universal Secondary Education (USE) programme, which kicked off earlier this year.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) chief, Matthew Bukenya, yesterday said: “We are happy the number has gone up. It could be because of USE. But there are those who did not want to register, because they felt they were not prepared for the exams.”

Bukenya said the registration exercise ended without any formal complaints.
“There was an appeal from the ministry (of education) that we extend the registration, but I have not seen anybody coming. If there is a genuine case, we will arrange for the facility.”

Media reports had alleged that about 500,000 PLE candidates had not been registered.

“We do not have problems with the primary level, because the district inspectors are directly involved with the schools. ”

On O’ Level, A’ Level and technical exams, Bukenya announced that candidates whose schools did not have centre numbers must check in advance for their details at the centres where the candidates were registered.
