The former National Social Security Fund (NSSF) managing director, Leonard Mpuuma, was on Friday granted bail after spending two weeks in Luzira Prison. Justice Opio Aweri ordered Mpuuma not to travel out of the country without notifying the Police and court. Mpuuma is facing charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss. He allegedly accepted a sh637m bribe from a businessman, James Isabirye Mugoya, one of his co-accused. The Buganda Road Court issued an arrest warrant for Mugoya, the managing director of Mugoya Estates. He is accused of giving Mpuuma $350,000 (sh637m) to induce him to skew a joint venture with NSSF in his favour.

113 girls defiled
Kayunga
A total of 113 girls have been defiled this year in the district. Releasing the half-year crime report at Kayunga Central Police Station on Friday, the district crime chief, Grant Tabo, noted that defilement cases had increased due to the negligence of parents and poverty. Tabo said among the 113 girls, 36 were aged below 10. The majority of the suspects were businessmen and close relatives to the victims, he said. Tabo warned local council leaders against conniving with parents of the victims to settle defilement cases out of court. According to the report, 19 cases of murder were reported. The Police also recorded six cases of robbery and 251 of theft.

Police constable arrested
KAMPALA
A special Police constable was yesterday arrested in connection with shooting at an American citizen. Abdu Kibirige is being detained at Kawempe Police Station for allegedly shooting at Grace Bemba of Katooke village, Kawempe Division. Bemba’s vehicle was damaged.The Kampala Police spokesman, Simeo Nsubuga, said the incident occurred at the Nabweru T-junction on Saturday. Kibirige’s gun was impounded, Nsubuga told The New Vision.
