THE Electricity Regulatory Authority has denied approving electricity price increment.

“The present method of tariff announcement is that when the authority has approved any tariff adjustments, it passes it through the Minister of Energy who announces them as a political head of the sector,” Frank Sebbowa, the regulator’s chief executive officer, explained.

“I assure you that Umeme (the power distributor) has not applied for any tariff adjustments. The authority has not approved any and definitely the ministry has not been advised to announce anything,” he added.

Robert Kisubi, the Umeme communications manager said: “Umeme has not applied for tariff increase and is not preparing to apply for one any time.”

Daudi Migereko, the energy minister, said there was no tariff increment and there will not be any adjustments soon.

“Tell the public that there is not any tariff rise not even impending. Electricity prices will remain the same as they are now,” he stressed.

“I have not received any information in the sector regarding the tariff adjustments.
“Any information stating price rise is rubbish.”

Weekend reports claimed that energy tariffs would be increased by 30%.

Last year, the domestic power rates were raised by 37% or sh62 per unit and 55% for large industries.
