THE disaster preparedness minister, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, has criticised the former Bushenyi district chairman, Yowasi Makaru, for encouraging the split of the district. “If Makaru were still the district chairman, he would not agitate for the split, ” he said.

Kabwegyere was speaking at a fundraising at Ruhinda Secondary School in Mitooma sub-county, where he represented the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi.

The district councillors recently passed a resolution that Sheema, Bunyaruguru, Buhweju and Ruhinda counties be each granted district status.

MPs Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye (Sheema), Gaude Tindamanyire (Bunyaruguru), Deus Bikwasizehi (Buhweju) and Prof Ephraim Kamuntu, are advocating for the split, while ministers Richard Nduhura (health), Kahinda Otafiire (local government) and Kabwegyere are against it.

Kabwegyere said there is no reason for the district to split.

“I am a professor and a scholar, but I wonder where they got the knowledge that the counties can sustain a district status once granted,” he wondered.

He explained that his ministry was supplying food items to some areas which were granted district status because they did not have food.

The Ibanda North MP, Capt. Guma Gumisiriza, urged the residents not to split the district, arguing that they would lose their bargaining power with the Government.

Otafiire advised that it was vital for the district to remain united.

“Can you slaughter a goat alone as an individual? Let us remain together. Why are we hurrying?” he said.
