INDIAN Catholics working in Uganda last week presented a memento of honour to the Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. Aden Raj, a member of the Indian Catholic Community of Uganda (ICCU) said they were congratulating on his achievement and expressing their gratitude to him for his immense contribution to development.

Lwanga was elected as the president of Caritas Africa and vice-president of Caritas International. Caritas is the internationally coordinated socio-economic development arm of the Catholic Church. A few months later, the Pope transferred Lwanga from Luweero and elevated him to the archbishop of Kampala.

“The archbishop helped the people of Luweero to recover from the tormenting effects of the bush-war. He built schools, churches, presbyteries and also started several income-generating projects for the people. He has also worked hard to bring peace to northern Uganda,” Raj said.

The chairman of ICCU, Joseph Almeida, said they were committed to helping the less privileged.

Lwanga commissioned four wheel-chairs, which the Indian Catholic Community donated to the Spinal Injury Association of Uganda.
