THE Internal Security Organisation (ISO) has started registering foreigners residing in Kampala.
According to sources, the exercise, which kicked off on Friday, is geared towards weeding out illegal foreigners and refugees ahead of the Common Wealth Heads of Government Meeting in November.

“The Kampala district internal security officers (DISOs) have been instructed to carry out the exercise along with defence secretaries in Local Council II (parishes) in all divisions,” a source at the ISO directorate said yesterday.

Erie Ssanja, the DISO for Old Kampala, said Somalis, Congolese, Nigerians, Ethiopians, and Eritreans would be screened.

“We have registered over 500 Somalis and Ethiopian refugees residing in Kisenyi parish. The registration is free and we appeal to others to come,” he said.

Kampala Extra region Police chief Edward Ochom said some aliens were wanted by Interpol for crimes committed in other countries.

“We will not allow foreigners to stay here without proper documents. Those found will be charged with illegal entry,” he warned.

The Police on Monday arrested 15 Congolese, eight Tanzanians, three Rwandans, a Somali and a Kenyan national following an operation conducted by the Rapid Response Unit.
