The Africa Tumefika Fashion Show was awesome.

The fundraising charity fashion show started with a cocktail at the hotel’s gardens.

Remmie Male, one of the show’s organisers, told the audience that Africa Tumefika is a platform for East Africa to showcase her talent and also a campaign for African designers to help their needy people.

“In Kenya, we are tackling child prostitution, in Ethiopia it is Fistula we are fighting and in Rwanda, the problem of orphans left behind by the genocide,” she said.

She said she had a dream of helping children affected by the war in Northern Uganda but gave it up because she failed to find somebody to work with in the region.

Their was a video clip to highlight the plight of orphaned children in Uganda after which guests made contributions to help out the orphans.

Designs varied from African- inspired, funky urban street fashion, sassy clothing, sexy and traditional costumes.
An attire from Latif, made from bark cloth, would bring to mind Shaka Zulu’s mother from the South African epic series.

Most of the models did the catwalk to African sounds of Mafikizolo. Qute Kaye and Juliana entertained guests.

The designers who took part were Maureen Akii Bua, Latif, Lubega Dee, Xenson, and Maj. Gen. Elly Tumwine, whose models did the catwalk to his music.

Others included Chui, FENOTE from Ethiopia, Stella Atal and Franco from Tanzania.

Known for his speed at work, Latif was challenged to make a dress for Juliana Kagwa, the Uganda Breweries brand manager of V&A, the event sponsors, in four minutes. He made not one but two dresses.
