GOLFERS at the Mbarara Open this weekend will have to contend with a dry and fast course. A long spell of no rain has left the par-70 Mbarara club course dry which poses a challenge to over 80 players due to compete.

“We have not had rain for long, but the course is playable,” a Mbarara club official Edwin Tumusiime explained.
The Uganda Golf Union (UGU) event, sponsored by Barclays Bank, has drawn all the top contenders for this year’s national championship title.

National champion Stephen Birungi, winner of the season-opening Bro Group Western Open, leads the pack.
Birungi, who claimed the national award for the first time last year, faces his old rivals including Mukwano Open champion Vincent Byamukama.

Other contenders for the UGU stroke-play championship Gerald Ayella, Shaban Lwanga, Denis Onyango and Nile Breweries sponsored Brian Toolit have also stepped up their training this week.
Seven more events will be held after the Mbarara show to get the winner of the domestic top prize.
The player with the highest number of points after the last event in December will be crowned national champion.
