THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) on Saturday burnt fake and expired goods worth over sh200m at its headquarters in Nakawa.

“As we mark the end of year, we are also burning these fake, substandard and expired goods which we have collected over the year,” Jackson Mubanguzi, the head of operations marketing surveillance, said.

Mubanguzi said another consignment of expired infant milk and tomato sauce worth sh400m, impounded from Dembe Trading Enterprises, is to be destroyed and the culprits prosecuted.

The burnt goods included beers, jik detergent, electric cables, bulbs, powdered milk, Royco, biscuits, quencher, tomato sauce, toilet paper and dry cells.

Mubanguzi said most of the items were found in Kampala supermarkets, Kikuubo, Jinja, Masaka, Mbarara, Soroti, Kumi and Kasese.

He said goods were impounded with the help of the public. He said most of the commodities were imports.

“Our people do not like locally manufactured commodities, yet they are the best. They think those coming from abroad are worthy.

For example on some cables it’s indicated that they are made from Italy which is not true,” he said. He said most consumers in Uganda are not sensitive to quality and always demand for cheap things. “So traders find ways of getting similar products so that they can get the money,” he said.
