THE deputy Katikkiro has refuted press reports that Mengo officials misappropriated funds for Mutesa I University.
“I want to clarify that it is not true that university funds were misappropriated. Former education and sports minister J.C Muyingo never made this statement as reported in the media,” said emmanuel Ssendaula, the new Mengo minister for education.
Recently, media reports quoted Muyingo saying during his handover ceremony that he refused to sign a report from the education ministry because it did not indicate proper accountability for university funds.
Ssendaula told the press, “You should report in a responsible manner because such information can discourage generous people from donating to the kingdom when they hear that their money is misused.”
Ssendaula said this at a meeting with delegates from Masaka municipality in the office of Mengo treasurer Ainea Ntate.
The delegation, led by Xavier Kizza, an aspiring MP for Masaka municipality, had brought a donation to the kingdom. Kizza contributed sh150,000 to the university and bought Buganda certificates worth sh100,000 on behalf of the municipality.
He was accompanied by John Kaddu and the Rev. Stanley Zavuga.
Kizza, a former commissioner in the fisheries ministry, urged Mengo to prioritise the development of Masaka town, which he said was in a sorry state.
