THE Africa Zone V Boxing Championship will be the only test for the Bombers’ before the Commonwealth Games.

Sharif Bogere (feather), Martin Mubiru ((fly), Atanus Mugerwa (bantam) and Eddy Akora (light) are part of Uganda’s team of 10 entered for the regional championship in Arusha, Tanzania next month.

The tournament, due on February 10-15, will be the only major boxing championship before the Melbourne games.

Cash-strapped Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) is seeking transport fare to Arusha.
Tanzania Amateur Boxing Association (TABA) has offered full-board accommodation for all visiting teams.

The event will involve teams from Egypt, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya and hosts Tanzania.

An offer by US based former Ugandan pugilists to aid UABF in its Commonwealth Games preparations still stands.

But the fundraisers have also said that much as they are ready to boost the national boxing body, it should also show seriousness by raising basics.

“Our promise will be fulfilled in a fortnight,” said coordinator David Kyambadde, however, noting that support could in future depend on the federation’s seriousness.

“These UABF officials should not merely sit in their Lugogo offices. Leadership is determined by ability to mobilise resources,” he stressed.

National team boxers last week complained that the Ishaq Kamoga led UABF had failed to raise basics like water and transport.

Kyambadde explained that they delayed to honour their pledge because of the death of one of the financiers Geoffrey Mutyaba. Mutyaba was recently killed in Zana on the Kampala-Entebbe highway.

“I take it upon myself to revive the drive,” promised the former boxer, who said the fundraising would also involve former IBF champion Kassim Ouma.

Uganda will be represented by Mubiru (flyweight), Mugerwa (bantam), Bogere (feather) and Akora (lightweight) in quadrennial games in Melbourne in March.

The fundraisings will also cover a bill for treatment of Bogere, who recently lost teeth in an accident.
