Minister Mike Mukula’s vehicle following President Yoweri Museveni’s convoy on the campaign trail in Teso, overturned yesterday, killing a female student.

Carol Taka, a student at Uganda College of Commerce (UCC), Soroti, was crushed to death when she panicked and attempted to jump out of the overturning vehicle.

Witnesses said Taka opened the door and jumped. However, the vehicle rolled over her before she could flee to safety. They said the vehicle overturned and rolled three times.

The accident took place at Apalamio, 20km from Soroti town on Kaberamaido road.

Witnesses said the vehicle hit the side of a vehicle carrying sugarcane from the opposite direction before it rolled thrice.

The other four occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to Soroti Hospital.

They included Francis Ojok of the Presidential Guard Brigade, Catherine Amok, a secretary in Mukula’s office and Matayo Okello.
Mukula was not in the vehicle as he had driven ahead. The Land Cruiser UAG 849N had been hired from R & B car hire.

Mukula hired the car at sh140,000 per day for his re-election campaigns for the Soroti Municipality parliamentary seat. He is facing FDC candidate Charles Ekemu.

In announcements over his Voice of Teso Radio, Mukula, the health state minister, consoled students of the UCC and Taka’s parents in Busia district.

A vigil was arranged last night at Mukula’s residence in Soroti town. The body will be transported to Busia for burial, according to the announcements.

The witnesses said the driver of the vehicle carrying sugarcane fled after the accident. The driver of the Land Cruiser was admitted in Soroti Hospital along with the other three survivors.

Amok said she was in a lot of pain when The New Vision contacted her yesterday. She said most of the pain was in her back and waist, though the whole body pained.
