LUWEERO war debtors last week dropped their demands for compensation in preference for loans, after General Salim Saleh promised to lend them sh188m when he met them in Luweero town on Friday.
Under the new arrangement, Saleh has agreed to lend sh1m to each of the 188 debtors, of which they each received sh200,000 on the spot, Friday.
The debtors, whom Saleh addressed at Kasana UMEA Primary School in Luweero town, said during the four-hour meeting that they opted for loans because they were fed up with endless ‘empty promises’.
The debtors, who for 20 years have been demanding to be paid, on Wednesday converged in Luweero town from their various home districts, after receiving assurances from their leaders that they were finally going to have their claims settled.
They were, however, frustrated when Saleh told them that only 23 of them were on the Government pay list, although most of them seemed to have genuine claims.
Present at the meeting, which ended after 7:30pm, was Luweero RDC Geoffrey Kyomukama and the DISO, Lt. Kizza.
Before the meeting, Saleh sent two bags of rice which the debtors ate for super on Thursday night and lunch on Friday.
The debtors said they had lost hope after receiving several promises to be paid which the Gover-nment failed to honour.
